Workshops: Daven Hee, Living Surfaces: Forms to Glazes

View Deven's WorkDaven Hee currently runs the ceramics program at Mid-Pacific Institute in Hawaii, but has taught ceramics at the University of Hawaii and the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He holds a Masters of Visual Art from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Hawaii. His distinctive and intricate bowls, jars, teapots, toys, and sculpted forms are wheel thrown, with sometimes as many as 70 pieces thrown to add to and alter the basic shape. Many of his works are not intended for utilitarian use but rather "… to hold an idea, the idea of form and expression".

His demonstration workshop in Saskatoon will highlight his focus on the importance of form and surface in glazing. He will provide and discuss his own ash recipes as well as speaking to adapting existing ones. He primarily fires to cone 9/10 in reduction but also fires with a soda kiln, raku, pitfire, and currently works with low temperature glazing. While he uses the wheel to form he does a lot of altering and joining using a handheld torch to speed up the process. His Friday evening lecture will showcase his work, his influences, and the Art programs in Australia and Hawaii with a look at the countries as well.

Samples of his work may be viewed by googling: lodestar collective. When the home page is displayed click on the 5th star. Two rows of photographs will appear, click on the second photo in the top line. You can then watch his slide show. You have to be very patient as it does take some time for the images to appear but it is worth the watch.
