SPG Clay Policy

PURPOSE OF GUILD CLASSES

As part of the Aims and Purposes of the Saskatoon Potters Guild Constitution, classes for adults and children are provided for community members to

  • promote an appreciation of the art and craft of ceramics

  • provide an opportunity to learn and build competence in key skills of hand building and/or throwing and glazing

  • foster an understanding and appreciation of the elements of ceramic design

Guild classes are not intended for production pottery for personal use, donation or sale. Production refers to the process of creating a large number of similar products. Production diminishes the educational purpose of classes. It uses up shelf space which should be shared equally amongst all students and it also puts an extra workload on our kilns.

CLAY USE GUIDELINES

  1. Only clay purchased through SPG can be used in our classes. If you have clay left over from one series, you can use it in the next one.

The cost of a bag of clay includes two firings and glazing and accounts for wear on our kilns. This is why a bag costs more than if you bought it at a local store.

    2. In any class series, you may buy up to one extra bag of clay, assuming your clay is being used for class projects and not

production work. You may only buy one bag at a time. Finish one bag before you buy the next one. . If you feel you need more

than one bag, talk with your Teacher who may authorize more clay.

     3. The clay you purchase is intended for use in the classroom only. On special occasion students may take home a project to

finish something which is time-sensitive; eg carving. Talk with your Teacher if you wish to use some of your clay at home

      4. We have two types of clay for classes. Beginners use a buff clay and intermediate class students and hand builders use a

white clay body. The cost of your first bag of clay is included in your class fee EXCEPT if you are an experienced student

in a beginner class and want to use white clay, you must pay an extra $5 in cash at the first class.
